Why Exfoliation Is a Non-Negotiable Step in Your Skincare (and Tanning!) Routine

If there’s one step people skip in their skincare routine, it’s exfoliation. It doesn’t feel as satisfying as slathering on a rich moisturizer or as exciting as a new serum, but skipping it is one of the biggest reasons skin looks dull, feels rough, or won’t hold a tan evenly. Let’s talk about why exfoliating your face and body regularly matters for your overall skin health, and why it’s an absolute must before your airbrush tan.

What Exfoliation Actually Does

Exfoliating before your tan removes buildup so your skin can absorb color evenly.

Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells every 28 to 40 days or so, but that process slows down as you age, and it can also be disrupted by sun exposure, dry air, and everyday buildup of oil, sweat, and product. When dead cells aren’t cleared away, they sit on the surface and make skin look flaky, dull, and uneven in texture.

Exfoliating — whether with a scrub, a chemical exfoliant, or a dry brush — physically or chemically helps remove that buildup. The payoff shows up almost immediately:

• Brighter, more even-toned skin. Removing dead cells reveals the fresher, more radiant layer underneath.

• Smoother texture. No more rough patches on elbows, knees, or that dry spot on your face.

• Better product absorption. Moisturizers, serums, and treatments can’t do their job if they’re sitting on top of dead skin instead of sinking in.

• Fewer clogged pores and breakouts. Regular exfoliation keeps oil and debris from building up and turning into blackheads or blemishes.

• Improved circulation. Especially with dry brushing or manual scrubs, exfoliation stimulates blood flow, which supports skin’s natural repair process.

Over time, consistent exfoliation (2–3 times a week for most skin types, though your face may need a gentler touch than your body) keeps skin healthier, more resilient, and better able to do its job as your body’s protective barrier.

Why It’s Essential Before an Airbrush Tan

Here’s where exfoliation goes from “nice habit” to genuinely non-negotiable: your spray tan is only as good as the canvas it’s applied to.

An airbrush tan works by depositing a bronzing solution onto the outermost layer of your skin. If that layer is covered in dead skin cells, dry patches, or leftover lotion residue, the solution has nothing solid to grip. Here’s what happens without proper exfoliation:

1. Uneven, patchy color. Dead skin sheds unevenly, taking your tan with it in blotches — usually within a day or two.

2. The tan fades faster. Since it’s sitting on cells that are about to slough off anyway, the color disappears much sooner than it should.

3. Dry areas grab too much color. Elbows, knees, ankles, and knuckles are naturally drier and more prone to buildup — these spots soak up extra solution and turn darker than the rest of your body, creating that orange, uneven look nobody wants.

4. Texture shows through the tan. Rough or flaky skin becomes even more visible once color is added, since the tan highlights texture rather than hiding it.

Exfoliating 24 hours before your appointment — never right before, since freshly exfoliated skin can be more sensitive and pores are more open — smooths the surface so the solution goes on even and lasts as long as it possibly can. It’s the single most impactful thing you can do at home to get salon-quality, streak-free results.

A Few Tips for Pre-Tan Exfoliation

• Use a gentle, oil-free scrub or exfoliating mitt — oils and heavy moisturizers can leave a barrier that repels the tanning solution.

• Focus extra attention on elbows, knees, ankles, and hands, since these areas are driest and most prone to grabbing too much color.

• Shave or wax before you exfoliate and tan, ideally the day before your appointment, so your skin has time to calm down.

• Skip lotion, deodorant, and perfume on the day of your tan — clean, bare skin is what allows the airbrush solution to develop evenly.

The Bottom Line

Exfoliation isn’t just a spa-day extra — it’s a foundational habit that keeps your skin healthy, smooth, and glowing all on its own. And when it comes to your airbrush tan, it’s the difference between a flawless, natural-looking glow and one that fades unevenly within days. A little prep goes a long way, and your skin (and your tan) will thank you for it.
